introduction
As part of our third module at Hyper Island we had a 3 day workshop with IDEO. First we had to choose a local business to develop a new product or service for. We then got taken through developing a concept using the IDEO methodology. Our chosen business was the local climbing wall, Karbin.
my role
I got to try my hand at being a photographer, climber, creative, prototyper and a presenter - all of which were great fun.
observe and enquire
We visited Karbin and split the group in two. One half observed the environment and looked for the opportunities within it. The other half interviewed customers and staff to gain their stories and insights. We all, of course, had a go at climbing too.
sharing session
Afterwards we shared our observations and stories. One of our main insights was that climbers enjoy the personal challenge of improving their own performance.
extremely analogous
Computer gaming provided a source for both an extreme user and an analogous situation. Whilst gaming provides a similar form of personal challenge to climbing - their biggest players aren't the most likely to be at the wall everyday.
idea generation
We used the research and analysis to create focus questions to use in our brainstorming session. Hundreds of ideas were generated and recorded on post-its in just over an hour.
rapid prototyping
The prototyping process enabled us to quickly understand and build on the concept whilst getting a real feeling for the experience.
our concept
Ghost Climber creates a direct personal challenge by projecting your last run on the wall next to you. A camera records your movements and saves it, meaning you can track your improvements and analyse each run.
